The difference between practice and games…

Do you ever feel as though your mechanics and fundamentals are different during your lessons or practice compared to where they are in a game situation?  Not only does it take over 1,000 repetitions to get a new movement built into your muscle memory, but players typically revert back to bad habits, or what feels comfortable when they are in game situations. 

In a stressful / game environment, players tend to lose focus on what they are trying to change or develop when they working on their mechanics and fundamentals at lessons or during a practice. The only way to actually see what is different with your mechanics and fundamentals during a game situation is by using video!

Mental Preparation

As the spring season gets underway, I feel it is important to speak on the topic of in-game awareness and mental preparedness. How many of you have watched your son’s or daughter’s teams in the past and seen a player field a ball and either throw it to the wrong base/person or have no clue what to do with it??

The game of baseball, and especially the game of softball, happens way too quickly for its participants to act in the moment, or make split-second decisions every time the ball finds them! Mental preparation for this game begins long before the players take the field! At the youth ages, (7-14) it is primarily the coach’s responsibility to make sure his or her players are prepared to play this game, not only physically, but mentally!! Yogi Berra said, “Baseball is 90 percent mental, the other half is physical.” Take from that what you will, but solely focusing on drill work, fielding, hitting, pitching mechanics etc… is not enough!! Especially these days, where kids have so much more going on in their lives, distracting them from the task at hand while on the ball diamond.

Challenge your players to know the game they play, inside and out. I am amazed at how many young and young adult baseball/softball players lack basic baseball/softball knowledge! It did not used to be this way!

Baseball is a game of continued growth and development.  If you are not getting better, everyone else will pass you by.  Players can always improve on their game no matter how good they are or how polished their skill set is.  Hard work and dedication has proven to show benefits to baseball players of all levels and ages, but are you working efficiently to develop your skills?  To play this game one must be in top notch physical condition.  Strength, power, speed, and agility all directly correlate to the five tools of baseball, and are a must for top level players.

Where does Velocity Come From?

This is something that has been a hot topic for years, and everyone has his or her own idea of the best way to gain velocity.  I’ve tried it all, weighted balls, rubber bands, weights, long toss, straps, weighted gloves, special workouts, and power necklaces.  In my professional opinion, velocity comes from three main things: strength, flexibility, and mechanics.  Pitchers must be strong throughout their entire body.  Velocity starts from the legs and hips, goes up through the core, and finally to the shoulder and arm.  A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.  I promote a full body workout that focuses on major muscles and even strength.  Range of motion in the shoulders, hips, and legs is extremely important!
